About the Heartist

Greetings, human. My name is Shannon. This is my oh-so-cliche "About Me" section.

Growing up, martial arts was a huge part of my life. I feel like maybe God gave me martial arts because He knew I would need a constructive outlet to get rid of all my teenage angst. When other depressed teens turned to cutting or anorexia, I reached for nunchucks or heavy bag gloves. The funny thing is, throughout all my martial arts training I've learned that the hardest battles we fight aren't with our fists, but with our hearts. The enemies we face aren't armed with guns or knives or swords or bo staffs; they're armed with lies and cruelty and arrogance.

I created this blog as an outlet to spill my thoughts. My expectation was that the main focus would be my thought and feels towards martial arts, since that's how I spent so much of my time. However, this blog has helped me discover that martial arts isn't what defines me...at all. I've found that if you're going to be a hero in this world, it doesn't matter who you can take in a fight. What matters is character and strength of heart. The real hero is the person who can stay true to their beliefs and stand up for what's right. That's the person I'd like to be. A Martial Heartist.
